The Sufferings and Triumph of the Messiah – Psalm 22

T

What do you think about Psalm 22 and its connection to the Gospel account of the crucifixion of Jesus?

·      Why did Jesus cry out ‘My God, My God why have you forsaken Me?’

·      How does this Psalm describe what the Messiah suffered at the cross?

·      Why is it legitimate (despite Jewish objections) to translate verse 16 ‘They pierced my hands and my feet’ with its obvious connection the crucifixion written about 900 years before the event?

·      What does the second part of the Psalm tells us about the resurrection of Jesus and the spread of the Gospel message throughout the world.

·      Is the Bible really the supernaturally inspired Word of God and is Jesus really the Messiah of Israel?

My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?
Why are You so far from helping Me,
And from the words of My groaning?
O My God, I cry in the daytime, but You do not hear;
And in the night season, and am not silent.

But You are holy,
Enthroned in the praises of Israel.
Our fathers trusted in You;
They trusted, and You delivered them.
They cried to You, and were delivered;
They trusted in You, and were not ashamed. Psalm 22.1-5
